Puzzle

A puzzle is usually a question or a quiz that requires an answer by the player.

The puzzle pattern does not refer to the whole game but only to parts of a game. For example, a game that is about finding a thief is not considered an example of the puzzle pattern as a whole, but smaller challenges might be puzzles.

Solving or answering a puzzle might require from the player to

  • provide an answer in the form of a word or sentence,
  • combine objects, or overcome other forms of , e.g. locating an object etc.
  • perform some primitive action.

The information that is required to solve a puzzle might be embedded in the physical surrounding. The player might have to interact with the physical world to obtain it. The information might be attached to a digital object with which the player has to interact, e.g. to collect it or it might require the use of a tool, e.g. in order to point to it or to perform another primitive action.
