This paper focuses on the problem solving activity of small groups of distant students, applying algorithmic structures. A number of empirical studies were conducted in the context of research on collaborative learning systems. These studies helped us observe interesting phenomena related with the methods applied by novice programmers when facing an algorithmic problem. These became visible due to the collaborative activity that monitored student interaction. In this work we summarize the studies, design features and examples relating to cooperation and solving of algorithmic problems. The discussion of these studies may provide an opportunity for further insights on teaching algorithms, using collaborative environments
